Synopsis:

As Station Seventeen’s rookie, Luke Slater knows his fire and EMS training will be both rigorous and risky, but he never imagined having to partner up with the one woman he wants to keep at arm’s length most of all. Quinn Copeland is as wide-open as Luke is reserved. He has no interest in letting the sweet and sexy paramedic rock his hard-earned control. But the need for composure becomes the need to survive when they find themselves in the crosshairs of a brutal gang leader on their first shift together.

Paramedic Quinn Copeland’s station mates aren’t just her friends. They’re her family. She’d do anything to keep them safe—including reluctantly trusting her impossible-to-read, impossibly gorgeous new partner with the one thing she holds close. As the passion between Luke and Quinn goes from a slow burn to a sizzle, their steps grow more and more dangerous, both in the firehouse and out. Can they outwit a cold-blooded killer and face the fears that could cost them everything? Or are they in too deep?

Shae moved her gaze over their surroundings in a methodical sweep, the eyes she’d squinted against the glare of the late-morning sunlight going round and wide as they landed on Quinn. “So,” she said, dropping her voice but not the ear-to-ear smile that told Luke nothing good was going to come from their now-private conversation. “About Quinn.”

“What about her?” Luke stared holes in the pick-off strap he’d pre-rigged before the drill, willing his fingers to steadily fasten the stupid thing to the main attachment point on Shae’s harness. Rope rescue. Safe transfer. Focus.

“You two have been spending some time together lately, huh?”

His stomach knotted before dropping toward his hips. “Quinn has been helping with my paramedic training,” he said, selecting his words with care. After a really hairy call had led the house to a gruesome arson/murder scene three months ago, Luke had been surprised to discover he had a fear of blood. But since he also wanted to help people as a first responder, he couldn’t let that fear—debilitating as it had been—stand in the way of him doing the job that would keep people safe.

So he’d done what he always did. He’d taken a step back to quietly attack the problem, devoting himself not only to the rest of his fire and rescue training, but to earning his certification as a paramedic at the same time. Yeah, the workload was intense, and no, balancing both didn’t leave him much time for luxuries outside of sleep or hot meals. He wasn’t exactly a stranger to balls-out hard work, though. In fact, he and hard work were more like what his seventeen-year-old sister Hayley would call “besties”. Not that Luke had any freaking clue what that might actually entail, since he never got past the handshake and Heisman stage with anyone.

That whole arm’s length thing? So not an overstatement.

At any rate, Luke had his sister and their grandmother, Momma Billie. He didn’t need a bunch of Lifetime Original moments to distract him from his goal. He’d attained his full qualifications as an EMT six weeks ago. Official paramedic status would be in his reach before the year was out, provided he could continue to keep his seemingly sudden-onset fear of blood at bay. He was well on his way to becoming a full-fledged firefighter, like he’d always wanted. Just as long as he could keep both his focus and his distance, he’d be fucking stellar.

Quinn looked up with a grin and a wave before heading back into the firehouse, and Christ, did she really have to have a set of cutely sexy dimples he could see all the way from here?

“Helping you with your paramedic training,” Shae echoed, her quiet murmur tumbling him right back to the here and now of the side wall of the engine bay.

Luke concentrated on the equipment in his hands, the clink of the carabiners and the soft hiss of the nylon ropes as he continued with the rope transfer while he spoke. “Sure. She’s been giving me tips and tricks to remember different procedures, telling me the fastest ways to safely do workups. Stuff like that.”

“Ah.” Shae waited a beat while he clipped the backup carabiner for the line transfer into place. “You know, it wouldn’t be terrible if you liked her.”

“I do like her.” The words shoveled out of his mouth by default. He double-checked the carabiner. Adjusted the slack in his line. Mentally kicked himself square in the nuts. “She’s nice.”

Shae made a noise Momma Billie would have described as unladylike. “You know what I mean, Slater. Don’t be a dumbass.”

And that was the problem, right there. He was a dumbass. He didn’t just like Quinn in a casual friends, good co-workers, she’s-helping-me-with-my-training kind of way. Nope. He was attracted to her. From the minute he’d clapped eyes on Quinn on his very first day as a rookie, Luke had had this reckless desire to kiss her. To hook his fingers in that waterfall of blond waves spilling down her back, to part her lips with his tongue and taste her until he ran out of air.

And he didn’t want to stop at her mouth.

Rebekah DeVall and Aveza of the Ecranhelm

One of the many things about being in a writing group and in the large writing community online is the opportunity to connect with other authors and being able to have the opportunity to be in the mix when writers start writing or when they start releasing their book.

That is the opportunity I have had with the author and book that is being spoken about today. Recently over the past 5 or more months, I have had the opportunity to work with and experience the world building of Rebekah Devalle.

Rebekah DeVall is the author of “When Your Melody Fades” and many more upcoming Christian fantasy books, Find her on Facebook or her blog, rebekahdevall.wordpress.com.

She is a great friend of mine and I was honored when she gave me the chance to help her with posting about Aveza of the Eranchelm and to help promote her book. Today, I will be interviewing her and asking her a few questions I feel everyone who would want to meet this lovely young lady would want to know about the writing of her newest book.

Before getting started and introducing the book and jumping right into the questions,

Aveza Kenlin is no classic princess. A harsh childhood leads her to join the Ercanhelm, the underground religious organization dedicated to removing her stepfather, Hagan, from the throne. Though she hides her identity from the Ercanhelm for ten years, her missions take her closer to the palace. Rumors of her true identity spread. If the Ercanhelm discover the truth, they will kill her. If Hagan discovers her, living within his city, allied with the Ercanhelm, he will kill them all. Both paths lead to death, yet Aveza cannot speak the truth, plead shelter from one or the other. How much is she willing to give for the cause? Can the truth set her free?

  1. In your story, you take on the discussion of child abuse, how do you feel you discuss so effectively?

Aveza of the Ercanhelm touches on both child and sexual abuse, incidentally. I’m not here to preach on the wrongs of abuse, but I can’t deny it happens, as much in that time as in ours.

I can’t pretend to understand what victims of abuse have gone through, but I can certainly empathize. On talking with friends of mine who have gone through abuse, I came to realize that they feel the same fears that the rest of us do, on a higher level. We all feel fear, pain, agony. I can only imagine how much worse this fear and pain must be when it’s inflicted by someone you love.

I guess the only way you can find out if I discussed it effectively is to read the book itself. 🙂 And if you, dear reader, read the book and find that this topic isn’t touched on correctly, contact me. I’m always open to learn.

  1. What inspired you to write out the character of Aveza? She seems to be a tough young lady, but what inspired you to have her experience and deal with everything she does?

She’s physically tough and gritty. Ten years of street life will do that to you, after all. 🙂

Aveza was originally a lot more fearful than she is now. Dominated by her stepfather, Hagan, she suffered many more effects of his abuse. She trembled every time she was near him, and she had a hard time trusting men at all.

When I sat down to create this final version of Aveza, I set out to create a girl completely different from who I am, but then came to discover that all of us have at least one feeling in common—fear.

In this final version, I came to realize that fear isn’t just external, but also internal. Aveza’s secret is much more hidden this time, and her fear is more of her secret being discovered rather than a repeat of her earlier abuse.

In my early twenties myself, I feel I’m on a constant road of self-discovery. At this age, we’re not entirely sure who we are nor who we want to be, and Aveza’s journey helped me explore that.

She helped me to explore some of my own fears and, in a way, grow braver.

  1. Name some of the important characters and what made you use the characteristics that they have.

Aveza: She’s tough, impulsive, yet caring for the underdog.

Falk: Caring, loving, defensive of the people he loves. He’s willing to sacrifice his own well-being in order to make sure everyone else is all right.

Madchen: She’s a writer, a “ministry kid,” who grew up with her father buried in the “ministry” of the Ercanhelm. Ironically, despite Aveza’s opinion of her, I’ve come to sympathize with her more than most of the other characters. Madchen, Daughter of the Ercanhelm, a novella companion to Aveza, is in the works now. 🙂

  1. Who are some of your biggest inspirations when writing? (Other authors, family, friends, writing group buddies?)

All of the above? 🙂

Hands-down, the best inspiration is music. No matter how bad my day is going, how uncooperative my characters are, the right music is the bandaid to cover all writing booboos.

Next to that, writing buddies. Writing buddies are the best for talking through plot problems and character deaths, because they get it, as you well know.

  1. What made you write a story about what I would call a “rogue princess”?

Not every girl wants to be a princess and wear a tiara. I mean, how many of us are actually going to be able to wear a tiara and fancy dresses and claim the title of “princess”?

Now a warrior, fighting for the right—every man, woman, and child on this Earth can do that. Aveza is who she is because, in a way, she symbolizes every one of us.

  1. Is there any other pieces of fiction (movies, video games, books, tv shows, etc.…) that you got inspiration from to write this novel?

The main group of the Ercanhelm (Aveza, Falk, Madchen, Baldric, and Knut) were originally called the Flashpoint Five, as I was challenging myself to write a more team-oriented story. The Canadian show, Flashpoint, is one of my favorite shows.

While a lot of the “team dynamics,” have moved over for more “rogue princess” action, Flashpoint’s adventure and care to save the lives of others have stuck around until the end.

Here you have it everyone, Rebekah Devalle’s interview as she talks about her new book Aveza of the Ercanhelm. It is an honor to share her experience with you all and hope you will check the book on Amazon.

Inspiration: My Writing

Inspiration comes in many shapes and forms. It is important to have an inspiration for your writing or your work in general. It was incredibly important when I started writing where I got inspiration from. This is just a few of the things to look through based on some of my inspirations put into categories and some of those things in each category.

Books:

Genres:

  • Young Adult: Young Adult Novels are some of the most popular books that have been published recently. With books such as The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, To All the Boys I Loved Before and In Between The Lines, books have tended to fall more for the young adult crowd (typically aged between 13 and 32) more and more readers have fallen under this bandwagon of reading about love or great adventures and everything in between. This is important to me at this point in my life because it is something that I’m interested in. I want to be able to sell books like the authors of some of the books listed above.
  • Sci-fi: This is more of a sub-genre in my writing, but it still something that I love to implement in my writing. I use these things from this genre to make my writing have that extra kick in it.
  • Romance: This is used in YA novels all the time. There can be a natural disaster and still there is a romance plot… Of course I’m going to use it.

    Authors:

  • There are too many authors to name that inspire me. There is something unique about many authors from playwrights to novelists… There is so much to learn from so many authors from around the world that  I can’t possibly have the time to even list a few and their attributes I get from them. I have learned to just look at the  bigger picture and use inspiration all over.

    Other:

  • There are other things that inspire me; such as music, quotes, and pictures. These are all a big part of what I write about. I try to find the story solely based on the lyrics of the song or try to picture what is going on in a picture (almost like a STARR test perhaps). I’m not even sure where I learned that from, maybe it was from all the standardized testing. My mind is open and I use inspiration I can get.
