Hey All I have found that doing Blog Tours helps a little with traffic! That being said I am happy to help out two very special friends. Rebekah DeVall, author of Aveza of Ercanhelm, and around the writing circles she is known as the #flashfloodtypist, & Annie Twitchell, known for her poetry collections, like Jump. Both of these girls have been a big part of my journey and I can’t wait to share my first story with them.

Today, I will be highlighting Rebekah’s new story, Death’s Mirror. Both of these girls wrote short stories based on Snow White. Rebekah’s question was a play on life and death, and what if the Prince was a metaphor for death?

Fashion and the Importance of the Era

Fashion Post

Fashion and setting are very important to a story and that is essentially what helps make a story that story. I truly believe that fashion is something that we all need to talk about. Fashion is important for us all, just read what Savannah Jezowski author of the new Amazon book, After. I was blessed with the honor of actually getting to talk to her about the book a little. She has a specific question discussing fashion and how it relates to the plot of her book.

Fashion is a big thing for me, one of my many passions. That is why I feel like this post is something that is important as well. My era is simple, 1945 to 1950 right after WWII which means dresses. women started to wear pants, women’s styles, especially in the royal world, were changing. This was important for my story as it develops my MC’s personality and how she is different from everyone else. One of the big things about fashion is the importance and depth it held.

When asked about fashion in settings many agreed that it is important to keep things realistic. There is a difference between a man in slacks and t-shirt Vs. that of one wearing a suit, top hat, and holding a briefcase. In the case of my latest WIP, both do exist, only it is important to distinguish what lifestyles the two live and determine if it is vastly different. There are different eras to describe and how fashion changes.

A flapper from the 1920’s Vs. a society woman from the 1940’s is going to have two distinctive descriptions based on the era and how the story is set up. However, there are some like author, Annie Louise Twitchell, that it isn’t always important. While some of her plots depend on it, most of it is something the reader can get a feel for without those descriptions that I would love to use.

Another writer, Rebekah DeVall, thinks it depends on the character, and story you are trying to tell. That it can tell a story, but it is by circumstance. Many authors actually agree with this and agree that it might not always be important. Fashion in writing is not always important, as it is a tool as many other things in world building.

Keep Writing On,

Autumn J. Cruz

“Some people might say that there are worse fates than death. In some worlds, perhaps that may well be the case. But in mine, it would be a lie. There is no greater horror than that which comes after death.”

On the streets of an ancient city, with creepers wandering at will and a mysterious assassin leaving corpses all over Pandorum, a young Spook with a dark secret will do anything to keep his brothers safe, even from forces that threaten to tear them apart from within. While others are searching for impossible cures from outlawed Spinners, Conrad Ellis III does not believe in fairy tales and miracles. But when he discovers a strange girl with shrouded ties to the Assassin, Eli is forced to leave the streets he loves and travel into the very heart of Pandorum in order to save a member of his family. With his health failing and the danger escalating, there is no escaping the inevitable truth. Today, he may hunt creepers.

Tomorrow, he just might be one.

What are your inspirations?
I draw inspiration from many places, whether I am wandering the bookstore looking at yucky zombie covers and thinking about creepers, playing with my daughter, or in church supposed to be listening to the pastor. 🙂 I’m always listening to snippets of conversation or watching movies and reading books and stashing away ideas from the stories that truly strike me as amazing. I’m always asking myself: “I love this: so what made it so amazing and how can I apply this to my own style of writing?”

What can you see in the future for these characters?
I tentatively have two more novels and novellas plotted or summarized for this set of characters, so I actually foresee quite a bit for them LOL. There will be some fun times and hard times with lessons that need to be learned, some fairy tale themes and some spiritual parallels…overall, I foresee a good ending.

Do you ever write characters inspired by your real life friends or family?
Not exactly. I named my main character after my little brother and intend to introduce some plot threads inspired by my other brother in the upcoming novels, but I am usually more inspired by experiences than actual people. I DO like to write my store FOR people, however. I wrote After for my brothers (which is probably pretty obvious). I wrote Wither, the companion story to After which is found in Five Enchanted Roses, for my Marmee who loves gargoyles and stone angels. I wrote When Ravens Fall for my brother-in-law who loves squirrels. So although I’m not writing about them, or characters that resemble them, I AM writing stories that I hope will resonate with them.

What is your take on including fashion inspirations in your story?
I love awesome clothing, so I do put some thought into what my characters are wearing, although I don’t usually spend a great deal of time describing it. I like to leave something to the reader’s imagination.

What is fashion like in your era of your book?

My story is set in a sort of Dickens/Victorian era story world with some Asian and steampunk flare sprinkled. There are horses and carriages and the like, so many girls would wear dresses or Asian-inspired tunics and trousers. My heroine dresses in the Asian style outfits, primarily, with an adorable hooded long coat. Most of my characters are extremely poor, however, and dress very simply: shirt, trousers, suspenders and the like. There is one character, though, who is extremely fashion-conscious. He likes to wear a dragon belt buckle, bowler, and a snazzy green coat with straps and buckles and pockets all over it (very steampunk).

Strong Female Characters: Guest Post by Rebekah Devall

I have five little sisters. Does this instantly make me a good writer of strong female characters? I wish.

These days, our fictional girls are kick-butt. They can do anything a man can – and probably better. To top it all off, they don’t need a man or a romance to make their lives complete. We’ve come a long way from Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, in their damsel-in-distress lives.

So what exactly is a strong female character? And how do I write one?

Hi, I’m Rebekah.

Rebekah DeVall prides herself on being the girl who wrote 200,000 words in 21 days. She’s a Christian author with a penchant for killing characters and a love for writing real female protagonists described as “the example of a Christian hero that young readers need to see”.

So what exactly is a strong female character? Here’s what Merriam-Webster gives as the definition of “strong”:

  1. Having or marked by great physical power
  2. Having moral or intellectual power
  3. Having great resources (as of wealth or talent)
  4. Of a specified number (an army ten thousand strong)
  5. Striking or superior of its kind (a strong resemblance)
  6. Effective or efficient especially in a specified direction (strong on watching other people work)
  7. Not mild or weak.

So let’s see which of these apply to female characters.

Having or marked by great physical power – oh boy. When it comes to modern fictional heroines, that’s for sure! Look no further than Shuri or Okoye from the Marvel’s “Black Panther” and you’ll see what I mean. We could also talk about Rita Vatraski from “Edge of Tomorrow” and Tauriel from Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit”.

Having moral or intellectual power – yes! These are the masterminds of the fictional world. The first ones that come to mind are Elizabeth Swann and Carina Smyth from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

Having great resources (as of wealth or talent) – definitely! Think Elsa from “Frozen” her greatest resource is her ice powers.

Striking or superior of its kind – all of these ladies are striking. They’re difficult to forget even after you’ve turned off the movie and gone on with your life. They’ll live on.

So here’s your challenge – can you create a female character as strong and as memorable as these women mentioned above?

Who’s your favorite fictional heroine? Have you created strong female characters?

Lunetta and Her World of Inprisonment

Iron Core Cover

Everything will be okay.
Deep in Brancaleone, a prison carved from the mountainside, eighteen-year-old Lunetta plans her escape. Raised behind iron bars, all she wants is freedom – and to take her mother with her.

I am glad to actually get inside the head of the main character, Lunetta today! Lunetta is a strong soul who has been locked away for a crime she didn’t even commit. Being dedicated to her mother, she seems to try to escape to save them both. With her own problems, growing up she has had to depend on others to keep her comfort and have her find her way in this prison.

Lunetta, thank you for being here! I am glad to talk to you, I have a list of questions that I want to ask you and feel free to take your time answering!

What is your experience growing up locked away with your mother?

I was born in the prison. The very first memory I have is of my mother’s dirty face looking down on me, and the manacles on her hands being heavy when she held me.

When I was five years old, the guards tore me away from her and took me to my own cell, and I have been there ever since.

Do you understand what your mother is being accused of?

No, and she refuses to tell me.

How is your relationship with your mother?

She lives miles and miles under the ground, in solitary confinement. She’s so emaciated and ill that when I do manage to sneak out of my cell to go visit her, she is exhausted and can only talk for a few moments. She refused to try to escape with me.

Do you know your father or do you have a father figure?

I don’t know my father. I do know that my brother Zane and I have different fathers. I do have to wonder what kind of father would leave us to die here, alone in this prison.

I guess Erec could count as a father figure, although he’s the one who caught me all those times I tried to escape. But still, he comforted me when I was small and afraid, and he’s the only person besides Mother that I can speak with.

Author Interview Rebekah Devall

This month I am getting the opportunity to talk and discuss with one of my favorite authors Rebekah Devall. Rebekah’s new book: Iron Core was released April 28th and I am glad to help her spread the word.

Author Photo

Rebekah DeVall prides herself on being the girl who wrote 200,000 words in 21 days. She’s a Christian author with a penchant for killing characters and a love for writing real female protagonists described as “the example of a Christian hero that young readers need to see”.

Her amazing new book, Iron Core is a great example of what she has always talked about and her beliefs.

What made you write these stories?

I was a reader growing up. I was “the girl with her nose in a book”. My family had to come drag me out of my room (or off of a tree) to get me to come eat! All that reading led to so many stories in my head, and writing was the only way to let them out! I love writing and exploring different worlds that I’d never be able to experience otherwise.

Are these characters based on real life people?

Actually, yes! My dad somehow sneaks into nearly every story I write. In Aveza of the Ercanhelm, he was Knut. In Iron Core, he’s Erec, the fatherly figure.

Lunetta, the main character, obviously has a lot of resemblances to myself, but her fear is something that I feel a lot of us go through.

Does your work ever make you see things like being fully pulled into a scene?

I actually dreamed through a scene several times! (It had to be a death scene, of course.)

I’m not a very visual writer, and have always struggled with descriptions. I’m not regularly seeing scenes in my head, but when they do, trust me – you don’t want to know about it.

Synopsis:

As Station Seventeen’s rookie, Luke Slater knows his fire and EMS training will be both rigorous and risky, but he never imagined having to partner up with the one woman he wants to keep at arm’s length most of all. Quinn Copeland is as wide-open as Luke is reserved. He has no interest in letting the sweet and sexy paramedic rock his hard-earned control. But the need for composure becomes the need to survive when they find themselves in the crosshairs of a brutal gang leader on their first shift together.

Paramedic Quinn Copeland’s station mates aren’t just her friends. They’re her family. She’d do anything to keep them safe—including reluctantly trusting her impossible-to-read, impossibly gorgeous new partner with the one thing she holds close. As the passion between Luke and Quinn goes from a slow burn to a sizzle, their steps grow more and more dangerous, both in the firehouse and out. Can they outwit a cold-blooded killer and face the fears that could cost them everything? Or are they in too deep?

Shae moved her gaze over their surroundings in a methodical sweep, the eyes she’d squinted against the glare of the late-morning sunlight going round and wide as they landed on Quinn. “So,” she said, dropping her voice but not the ear-to-ear smile that told Luke nothing good was going to come from their now-private conversation. “About Quinn.”

“What about her?” Luke stared holes in the pick-off strap he’d pre-rigged before the drill, willing his fingers to steadily fasten the stupid thing to the main attachment point on Shae’s harness. Rope rescue. Safe transfer. Focus.

“You two have been spending some time together lately, huh?”

His stomach knotted before dropping toward his hips. “Quinn has been helping with my paramedic training,” he said, selecting his words with care. After a really hairy call had led the house to a gruesome arson/murder scene three months ago, Luke had been surprised to discover he had a fear of blood. But since he also wanted to help people as a first responder, he couldn’t let that fear—debilitating as it had been—stand in the way of him doing the job that would keep people safe.

So he’d done what he always did. He’d taken a step back to quietly attack the problem, devoting himself not only to the rest of his fire and rescue training, but to earning his certification as a paramedic at the same time. Yeah, the workload was intense, and no, balancing both didn’t leave him much time for luxuries outside of sleep or hot meals. He wasn’t exactly a stranger to balls-out hard work, though. In fact, he and hard work were more like what his seventeen-year-old sister Hayley would call “besties”. Not that Luke had any freaking clue what that might actually entail, since he never got past the handshake and Heisman stage with anyone.

That whole arm’s length thing? So not an overstatement.

At any rate, Luke had his sister and their grandmother, Momma Billie. He didn’t need a bunch of Lifetime Original moments to distract him from his goal. He’d attained his full qualifications as an EMT six weeks ago. Official paramedic status would be in his reach before the year was out, provided he could continue to keep his seemingly sudden-onset fear of blood at bay. He was well on his way to becoming a full-fledged firefighter, like he’d always wanted. Just as long as he could keep both his focus and his distance, he’d be fucking stellar.

Quinn looked up with a grin and a wave before heading back into the firehouse, and Christ, did she really have to have a set of cutely sexy dimples he could see all the way from here?

“Helping you with your paramedic training,” Shae echoed, her quiet murmur tumbling him right back to the here and now of the side wall of the engine bay.

Luke concentrated on the equipment in his hands, the clink of the carabiners and the soft hiss of the nylon ropes as he continued with the rope transfer while he spoke. “Sure. She’s been giving me tips and tricks to remember different procedures, telling me the fastest ways to safely do workups. Stuff like that.”

“Ah.” Shae waited a beat while he clipped the backup carabiner for the line transfer into place. “You know, it wouldn’t be terrible if you liked her.”

“I do like her.” The words shoveled out of his mouth by default. He double-checked the carabiner. Adjusted the slack in his line. Mentally kicked himself square in the nuts. “She’s nice.”

Shae made a noise Momma Billie would have described as unladylike. “You know what I mean, Slater. Don’t be a dumbass.”

And that was the problem, right there. He was a dumbass. He didn’t just like Quinn in a casual friends, good co-workers, she’s-helping-me-with-my-training kind of way. Nope. He was attracted to her. From the minute he’d clapped eyes on Quinn on his very first day as a rookie, Luke had had this reckless desire to kiss her. To hook his fingers in that waterfall of blond waves spilling down her back, to part her lips with his tongue and taste her until he ran out of air.

And he didn’t want to stop at her mouth.

Falk of the Ercanhelm

Hello, today I am able to interview Falk, from Aveza of the Ercanhelm. Falk is known as one of Aveza’s closest friends.

Falk’s an apothecary, a “doctor” who treats with herbs. He’s so extremely private about his personal life that Aveza knows almost nothing about him next to his name and connection to the Ercanhelm (their underground organization). He chose her as his trainee several years before the beginning of the story and has been teaching her all kinds of self-defense and fighting… things… Their relationship was kind of unprecedented since they’re male and female.

  1. Falk, you’re Aveza’s closest friend, correct? I just have few questions regarding your relationship with Aveza, your life and the things that make you who you are! Are you ready!?
  2. Can you talk a little about your childhood? It seems not many people know about you and that part of your life?

I prefer not to speak of it. Some tales are for one person alone.

  1. How old were you when you started with Ercanhelm? Was it something you wanted to do, felt you had to? Were you born into it?

I joined the Ercanhelm nearly fifteen years back, after a string of harsh circumstances left me battered and beaten on the streets. Baldric took me in, and I have been connected to the Ercanhelm since then.

  1. I understand that your group, the Ercanhelm is a secret group trying to overthrow your ruler?

This isn’t common information, so you are not to repeat this, you hear? We are not here to remove King Hagan from the throne, but rather to bring a righteous king—Baldric—to it. In order to bring Baldric to the throne, we must remove Hagan.

  1. What is your role in the Ercanhelm?

I am a part of the Ercanhelm street crews. Not only am I versed in our book, the Shield, I am also trained in weapons. I am amongst the first in battle, and the closest to Baldric, our leader. At the heart, we are servants, focused on serving, protecting, and aiding all others. My specialty as an apothecary is only an added aid.

  1. What is something that in your specialty being a herbal doctor for the Ercanhelm that no one else understands?

No matter who calls me, I will go. If King Hagan himself called me to tend to him, I would go. My task is to spread Ercan’s love and healing to others, regardless of their place or station or relationship with the Ercanhelm.

  1. As with this role, do the others look down on you or does anyone ever question your role?

I come and go silently, bothering none and drawing no questions.

  1. Now, that we know a little about you, what is your relationship with Aveza? How long have you known her? Can you tell us anything about her that no one else really knows, like some of her odd habits or quirks?

I have watched her since she first joined the Ercanhelm. Her hands shake when she is weary. She straightens her shoulders in attempts to make herself stronger than she seems. Vez is a deep woman. The surface, what we all see, is only the smallest tip of who she is.

  1. Can you explain to me some of the relations you have with other members of this group?

Baldric is my leader. In every way that counts, he is my king. Knut, well, he is an anomaly. I know most of the Ercanhelm by name from the many times I have treated some ailment. My authority is mostly respected since I come in Baldric’s name and under his orders.

  1. Okay, now that we have the basis of your life all around, I’m going to ask you some different questions. What is one thing you would do if your life was different?

If my life was different… meaning? I would return home and mend some things I left undone. Once again, a story meant for one person’s ears alone.

  1. If you could be anywhere in the world where would you be? Why?

I would be where I am this very moment. Buried deep in the catacombs of the city—living, fear not—participating in promoting what I believe. What else could a man want?

  1. You’re on a dessert island with nothing but supplies to build a fire, wood and twine, you can choose one person to help you build a shelter on the island or to help you get off. Who do you choose? Why? And what decision would you both make?!

You have never met him, but I would take my brother. He was always far more woods-savvy than I. We would find a way to escape, whether fighting through his enemies who left us there or fleeing in the night. Nothing is impossible with the two of us.

  1. What is one of your biggest fears?

Not being able to care for the ones I love.

  1. What is one thing that you fear might come out about your past?

I chose to train Aveza not because I saw some potential in her, but rather because I loved her. But no one need know that.

  1. Finally, what is one thing from your past that you wish everyone knew?

None of it. If people knew all of my past, I would lose the mystery that makes me dangerous. 🙂

Falk obviously has a tough background and has his own story to tell. It was a great opportunity to be able to talk to him and get to know things. I had a wonderful time finding out a lot about him and getting to see his…hostile attitude? I hope you all enjoyed learning about the person he is yourselves.

You can read and learn more about Falk, Aveza and all of their friends in Aveza of the Ercanhelm.
